How to Create a Home Office Space for Under $350

Welcome back!

I pray all is well with you all and your families.

A majority of Americans (as well as people around the world) are still working from home. Employers such as Google are extending work-from-home orders throughout the rest of the year. If you haven’t set up a home office, it’s still not too late. As I understand that people’s lives have changed based on health, economics, etc., I wanted to create a more realistic guide for those who can’t spend $500, $1,000, or more towards a home office space. Today, I’ll be sharing how I put together a home office for under $350. (Disclaimer: My office space was put together last year.)

First Step: Decide on the location of your Home Office

Do you have an entire room, half of the room, or corner to work with? I had a corner to work with so I went with a L-shaped desk.

Step Two: Write your budget

How much are you willing to spend to create a home office space? This could also be step 1, but it’s important to know whether you will need to furnish an entire room or just a section. This helps with over-spending.

Step Three: Decide what type of desk you want

There are various kinds of desks out there to choose from. Desk types include Corner, Writing, and an L-shape desk. I went with an L-shape desk, Cost: $105.99.

Step Four: Pick out an office chair

I strive to obtain a balance between comfort and aesthetic when selecting my office chair. After all, I do spend time in the seat. Common office chairs for the home include ergonomic, executive, and task chairs. My selection was a combination of the two types of chairs below, Ergonomic Executive chair, Cost: $104.67. I linked my office chair towards the end of this post.

Step Five: Secure your desk essentials

Desk essentials are things like stationary including lamps, pens, staplers, notepads, paper clips, and a filing organizer. These items are what makes your desk space organized.

Folder Organizer: $18.99 / Folders: $12.99 / Desk Lamp: $23.99

I’ve pretty much had the majority of my stationary items forever. I also did a DIY project where I took an old plastic container drawer that was black and spray painted it gold. You can have fun with this and repurpose things in your home, spending no to little funds here.

Step Six: Decorate your wall around office space

In this step, you decide on the amount of wall art, picture frames, and decor that you want in your office space. This depends on the individual. Examples include mirrors, picture frames, degrees, certificates, awards, magazine photos, and arts. Your wall can very well be bare. It’s totally an individual preference.

I consider myself a midi-minimalist, so I know I wanted just three things on my wall for now. Since I was gifted with a wall art like canvas already, I decided to get a circular mirror and wall calendar both with gold trimmings that complemented the wall art.

Mirror: $24.49 / Calendar: $15.44 / Girl Boss wall art: birthday gift

Step 7: Add an indoor plant to your office space

Plants can easily brighten up any room and liven up office space too. One of the best plants to start off with in your home office space is a fiddle-leaf fig or a corn plant. These are easy to take care of and require indirect natural sunlight.

Corn Plant: $19.99

The grand total comes to $328.90. This is pretty good for a legit in-home office space. In my opinion, it’s very worth it to invest in office space, because it helps to keep you motivated and organized.

I also purchased a room divider for my office space and to also serve as a backdrop for when I shoot content. A room divider is not necessary for a home office but is an added bonus. It’s also great for privacy to use near a set of windows, which allows for natural sunlight to still fill the room. Check it out below:
